The Light House serves women who are struggling with trauma, substance abuse disorders, mental health challenges, domestic violence, homelessness or other cyclical crisis situations that require stabilization. We serve up to 8 women (and their children) at a time in this 9-to-12-month transitional housing program. We have in-house programming that includes strength-based, client-focused case management, a curriculum of classes, peer to peer activities, 24-hour support and more. Further, the women receive mental health services and medical care through our current committed partners, Catholic Medical Center’s Healthcare for the Homeless Program and Amoskeag Health. Other community partners include, but are not limited to Families in Transition, Greater Manchester Mental Health Center, Granite YMCA, NH Workforce Development, Southern New Hampshire Services and more than 15 local churches.

The women served at The Light House are in crisis. Their past traumas have led them down a path of addictions, sex trafficking, abusive relationships as well as mental health disorders and more. Through this comprehensive system of supports and treatments, The Light House helps these women heal, stabilize and return to the community with independence and confidence, as they transition to healthy and sustainable lifestyles. The Light House is a faith-based program, however there are no religious requirements, and all are welcome.

The Light House is located in Manchester, NH.   This is a 9-bedroom, large home that is zoned for congregate housing.  The women, and their children (if they have them), will reside in private bedrooms with shared bathrooms on the second and third floors. We assess each situation and needs at intake.  The first floor has a kitchen, a large eat-in area and recreation space for congregant living.  There is also a large meeting room for classes and an office space for staff.  There is a small, fenced-in outdoor space in the back of the house.  We have the capacity to serve up to 8 women (and their children if they have them) at a time.

The Light House is a home environment that is rooted in Christian love and teaching that gives these women the knowledge, relationship building and courage they need to move beyond their most difficult circumstances.  One of the most significant ways that this happens is through their peer love and support of one another.  This will come with time and through the example and leading of the staff (case managers, overnight resident assistants, CEO, volunteers). They will also learn from each other through the group work they will do in the classes and activities. Our case management team will provide on-going opportunities for peer support groups based on the needs of the current residents in the home.  For example, groups for women working to get custody of their children, groups for women who are quitting smoking, groups for women who are severely overweight, prayer and worship (singing) groups, etc.  The Light House will simulate a family atmosphere as much as possible and a part of that is listening to what their ideas of a supportive environment are.

Finally, The Light House structure itself is trauma informed.  This means the environment promotes a feeling of safety, predictability, calm and trust.  This will come through the security of the building itself, the rules around social interactions and confidentiality, the responsiveness of 24-hour staff, the ability for staff to help recognize and address triggers and the daily routine and structure.
